Chapter Ten

Caroline sat with Sang-won, nominally working but actually letting the man distract her from work for once.

“You’re not actually letting me distract you if you keep checking your phone to answer emails from the Elgin group,” he said drily, slurping his milkshake obnoxiously. “I’m managing them and I’m not answering their emails right now, surely you can spare me a bigger slice of your attention!”

“Maybe I could, if they weren’t so incompetent,” Caroline said darkly. She looked up to glare at him. “Sang-won, if Greggory Jin shoves one more last-minute change on my lap, I will kill him. The sheer amount of stress he’s added to my life will make this murder entirely justifiable in court.”

“Ah, did you have to say that in my office, in front of me? I need some plausible deniability if someone asks me about it!”

“As if you’re not as pissed as I am.”

“I am pissed,” Sang-won said thoughtfully, as if just finding out about it now. Then he dropped the joke and sighed. “What else has he done, anyway? I’m not entirely caught up with the bullshit.”

Caroline told him everything—Andrea and the Belladonna butting in, Greggory being in cahoots with them or not, Adrien and her mother and what they could be plotting together… it was a relief to let it all out.

“Sang-won,” she said at last, “I know you’re a lazy airheaded idiot, but I don’t really believe you just forgot about the whole drama when you personally recommended Aya to me. Did you bring her into this on purpose?”

He looked at her for a moment, as if looking for an answer in her expression.

“Yes,” he admitted. “I’m sorry for all the troubles it’s caused you.”

“Why would you do that?” she asked, frustrated. “Why do you like Aya? I know your dad worked at the conference as a photographer and his career died—why do you like Aya and hate the Jins when everyone else involved in that mess is the opposite?”

Sang-won looked at his mostly empty milkshake instead of her.

“It’s funny, isn’t it, though?” he asked. “How the Belladonna floundered, Aya was ruined, the Quirkes imploded… but the Jins, and Greggory personally, are seen as such victims? Their image as the perfect family really saves them from everything.”

“Don’t talk to me in riddles,” she snapped. “Just answer!”

“The Jins aren’t saints,” he snapped back. “That’s my answer! I like Aya because she’s a good person—don’t you agree?”

He gave her a pointed look. A flush rose to her cheeks and she scowled. “Don’t shove your nose into what’s not your business.”

He gave her an amused, but unimpressed look. “All right. Just… trust me, Carol. I know you don’t understand shit, but things might still work out. Just wait.”

“I don’t think I’ll like whatever way you want things to work out,” she said warily. “I never thought you’d use the company, and me, for your own wily secret plans. Like, what is this, a stupid spy movie? Why can’t we all just plan a goddamn wedding in peace?”

He laughed.
